Joni Mitchell Retrospective

Joni Mitchell's finest musical compositions expressed acute loss and pain over the adoption of her daughter. Why does art demand sorrow?

Art demands sorrow because sorrow connects us all as human beings - it's a common thread - and many times sorrow causes us to remember what it is that is important.

i think that suffering is romanticised when one speaks about it in connection with art. people always think artist must suffer in order to create big art and never see how much harm can be created by this suffering.

So true with Joni... She turned her life into amazingly powerful songs. This performance of Cactus Tree is like the best ever.
