Dreams that die by Abdellatif Laabi

Dreams Come To Die Upon The Page

One by one
dreams come to die upon the page
They passed the word on
they come from everywhere
to die upon the page
like elephants in their graveyard
I witness their convulsions
am unable to offer them a cup of water
I look at them for the first time
for the last time
before wrapping them in the shroud of my words
and setting them on the tiny craft
which was once their cradle
The current carries them away
and brings them back to me quickly
as if the open sea were not out there
but here upon the page

the heart pauses in the words of Abdellatif Laabi

I was perusing a poetry section in the San Francisco Public Library last week and happened upon, The World's Embrace," by Abdellatif Laabi. You know when you have read great poetry for the words linger even after the book is closed.

I would like
to leave my closed room now
and find Saida Menebhi
at the street corner
more alive than when she was alive
holding the hand of a little girl
who would be her mirror image
And the little girl
would give me a black orchid
saying: This if for the pet's pain

Abdellatif Laabi

Author's note: A activist, fellow prisoner. Died in 1977 during a hunger strike.

This poem gives me pause to consider the one in my life that gave me a black orchid.
