Midnight Garden

reprint from March 23, 2007

The full moon shines
with all its might,
drenching my garden
with mystic light...............

L. 11 years old

Flowers such as "Queen of the Night" bloom only in hours of darkness and belong to my sister's midnight garden. They open pale eyes under the light of the moon, when the rest of the world is sleeping. Their perfume is more intoxicating than ordinary flowers for they belong to dream and mystery. One of the night flowers; Cereus greggi blooms only for one midsummer's night each year. The flower exudes its exquisite perfume as night falls, then closes forever with the first touch of dawn. There are people who are like that too; special people who in a unique moment touch us with ephemeral beauty.

Years ago I tried to pollinate Brooklyn. Okay small parts of it. I had this idea that I'd plant wild flowers in every vacant lot, and open patch of ground.

I had this vision of our less than happy corner of town being smothered in flowers.

Away I got some containers of wild flower seeds, and went to work. Unfortunately I didn't understand about the acidic water tables, and lead levels in the urban landscape.

Perhaps one out of hundreds of the seeds germinated. Still it was kind'a a good idea.

'Love your blog!

You have no idea what flowers you may have left behind. And one of those flowers on a certain day may touch the heart of someone who especially needs it. Thus making your efforts worthwhile.

Dear Princess Haiku, on my search for inspiration I came across your blog and seeing your post about the Midnight Garden, it inspired me to design a quickpage for scrapping, on which I used the the poem on your blog. I thought it was such a beautiful poem, so I hope you don't mind that I used it.
I will not post it on my blog yet, in case you have any objections.
This is what I created with Paint Shop Pro.

If you like it, I would be more than happy to send you a download link for it. It's in png format and you can just slide your favourite photos behind the frame.
