Poetic meditation on pink roses and sundry........

Tiny W. came to visit a few days ago as I was playing KDFC. As the opening melody of, Scheherazade spilled into the room he threw his arms into the air and started to spin about. A little later when the symphony ended he went over to the stereo of his own accord and kissed it. I would call this, "critical acclaim" for who hears better than an eighteen month old? And BTW his mother was so shocked that her mouth fell open.

How is it that all flowers make my heart give a tiny leap and roses make me feel so romantic and contented?

Their scent must play a role.

It's no surprise that Audrey Hepburn's favorite flower was the rose. I have a video of her touring rose gardens --she toured gardens in England and France and talked about roses, recited scraps of poetry. talked about the history of roses--Really relaxing to watch.

I have a special fondness for little pink rosebuds, just like the one you have pictured here. Maeve Brennan used to wear a rose or carnation on her lapel--of roses she said "florists can't wait to strip the rose of leaves and thorns and garotte it with sticky floral wire." Maeve preferred her lapel rose to have some leaf and at least one thorn intact.

Hi Princess S, I think you may well have a future dancer/musician there! I sometimes teach beginners ballet, children can start as young as 2 and a half years old, and the reaction of very young ears to music with movement and emotion like you described does bring tears to your eyes it's so beautiful! I recently went to Kew Gardens, if you're ever in the UK I think you'd love it

we are both thinking roses aren't we? though mine are from my neighbors yard for the most part. They have one of those yards with at least 50 different kinds of roses in it. there is a gated back yard and I really want to peek to see what they have back there. it has been ten years and I still dont know!

I can only think that 18-month-old must have inherited some very, very refined sensibilities. What a lucky child!

The loveliness of your roses makes me think of my own "Ode to a Rutabaga" which I wrote years ago when I first discovered them (rutabagas, not roses, that is). It goes,

Rutabaga, tutabaga,
Bake a squash pie.
Give your love a cauliflower -
Roses make her cry.

What a charming poem. Will read it to that small child.

Hi, Princess. I'm trying to come out of "day job" imposed blog-exile, and do a little "base touching" with folks here and there.
Thank you for these images, both the rose photos and the word-pictures, and the aural suggestion, for that matter. I can see the baby swirling about to Sheherazade! What a smile!

Hi A,
Thanks for stopping by and yes. The image of the baby turning around with his hands in the air is so sweet. I have been taking some time to go visiting to. Blogging requires such a fine balance of activity.
