here I am dancing again in a Fairy Ring, said Princess Haiku

"The English believed that fairy rings were where fairies came to dance and celebrate, the mushrooms of the rings were used as stools for the fairies to recuperate during the evenings festivities. One European legend tells of the origin of these rings as being burned into the soil by a sleeping dragon's tail."

"Everyone is a visionary" Yeats tells us, "if you scratch him deep enough. But a Celt is a visionary without scratching."

Princess, dance on! Love the Hughes, a copy's in my collection; I believe there's the remnants of a fairy ring in our current backyard (though half covered with paving stones:( and the video lullabied my step-son to sleep, which is just what he (and I;) needed.

Faerie rings are indeed magical. I had thought the faeries danced in a circle, and after, mushrooms would spring up from their footsteps. I love those rings of mushrooms, I like to hop inside the circle, and let my mind wander for a moment.. imagining what went on the night before.
Beautiful video, Loreena is one of my favorite singer/musicians.

Angels I have seen, but fairies have so far escaped me. Have a joyous time in your magic city.

I love faeries in literature, art, and in my imagination. I used to think I was an enchanted faerie turned into a human by a wicked witch. I held onto to that through much of my childhood. This post brought back memories. The first photo looks like cards I used to have to write notes to people on. I usually get a calendar with faeries from family at Christmas. I have enjoyed finding your blog, although I don't comment much.

Legends from England are very famous, and I think they are wonderful. Magic and legendary creatures.

Good celtic melody, and the scenes of so many movies wao. I like it.

Please Take care and have a good winter solstice you too!! Best wishes!

it really is the time of year when the real magic of the commonplace is revealed, isn't it?

ahhhhh ...... after a 14 hour car trip, what lovely images and sounds to relax by, wonder at .... to step outside and let the light of the full solstice moon graze my face and the sweet melody of loreena's mummer's dance soothe my tired bones ...

thank you, princess for the enchantment and for reminding me that magic still lives ...

We are all faeries within an incrustation of defense mechanisms against who have forgotten. Some of the roughest exteriors hide the sweetest hearts. Glad the shrooms have you dancing again.

Beautiful post, Princess Haiku, full of magic.

I lived in Ireland for a year and a half and you can truly feel the fairy magic at work and all around.

Hey there Haiku :D

This post is really interesting, I love finding mushrooms growing outside. Sometimes I find the most interesting mushrooms when I go for walks in natural areas during Spring, whenever this lovely cold weather passes over in the next 4 months I'll snap a photo of one for you.

Also, sorry I haven't been around I've been pretty busy but I wanted to say that I'm back and thanks for your comments. I'm posting my 7 amazing bloggers on Christmas. :D Also I'm a little bit worried, I took some online color blind tests and I'm wondering if I'm color blind, when you have some free time come by and take this test I have posted up.

Later and take care Haiku :)

PS - The full moon is incredible and on Christmas eve tonight Mars will also be very bright, it will be 55.5 million miles away from Earth rising a little bit before the moon.

I've always loved fairies and grew up with stories of fairy rings Princess Haiku.

Hope you have a very Happy Christmas and all the best for 2008

nope, never seen one of these!

my people are from Donegal--all Fairies are born there--behind Mt. Errigal. When Walt Disney decided to celebrate his Irish heritage he sent a writer to Donegal to interview a storyteller in Ardara. That man became the fictional "Darby O'Gill"

I've heard that some mushrooms live mostly under the soil. I believe that I have one under my yard which pokes up round cylindrical tendrils to the surface, with black fuzzy powder in the middle. I am not sure where the next tendril to the surface will appear but am always surprised at how enormous this thing must be to present at such far reaches of the land. Am not sure if fairies are involved but will keep you posted!

Dear Princess, I have made a post above these Fairy Rings, there are some in May in the green yard near my home
In French we use to call them "ronds de sorcières"
(Witches rings)

There is great myth surrounding mushrooms. I finished this post feeling closer to the earth and the magic that still exists all around us...
Quite the inspiration I need right now.
Thankyou.
