Help name Princess Haiku's ghost whippet

Princess Haiku has decided that a ghost whippet would make a perfect animal companion. If you look over the edge of a crescent moon, you will see whippet and I flashing by stars. Please help name the ghost whippet. If your suggestion gets chosen you win a link of the hour.

If you would like to adopt a real life whippet this link is for a whippet rescue in the US.

Cerebus?

Nimble is cool and Cerebus is evocative. I never heard of a whippet that guarded the gates of the underworld, though- but why not? We will see. let's keep these great suggestions rolling in.

How about Theodore?

I didn't real now what was mentb "whippet", but I've looked it up and now I know. If I had a whippet, I would probaby call it Amtrak, though that might be a little mean. Or how about Conny (short for Concorde).

I've no idea what a whippet is, but Fred's a good enough name for anything. Or is the whippet a female? In which case I'd go for Miranda.

Zephyrus, the West Wind, consort to the goddess Iris. Whippets run like the wind!

I suggest 'Thrace'.

Thrace is actually a place, somewhere in the vicinity of the current day Balkans, but historical authors used to call people of 'unknown origin' Thacians.

From a forum titled The Arms Of Sorbie I found this entry; Thrace was one of those places ancient authors used to use when they really didn't have a clue where a particular "barbarian" came from. You'll find Roman writings are full of Thracians. The great gladiator general Spartacus was one of those called a Thacian by the Romans. It's just a sort of shorthand for exotic foreigner of unknown origin.

These are such enticing suggestions that I can see that I am going to have to select semifinalists before the grand winner. Will be back later this afternoon to post the short list from this overwhelming response. I am reading a book I found at the University of Spectral Arts and Knowledge; The care, feeding and education of ghost whippets. They are sensitive creatures and if you hurt their feelings they can turn into rocks until they get over it.

Here is the long list:

Nimble (serious contender)
Whisper (has possibilities)
Cerebus (strong mythic image)
Romeo (maybe- but then I have to worry he'll be running after Juliette all the time)
Zephyr (good imagery)
Fred (good name for anything thank-you Occy.
Thrace (Camille, how on earth did you know he is from Thrace- it's where he grew up)
Long (I like this- how do you pronounce it?)
Theodore (good sturdy name)
Amtrack (I am not sure about this one indy)
Concorde (well-this is a tad better)

Dearest Princess,

I'm sorry but I cannot reveal my secrets (how I knew that your mystery whippet was Thacian in origin), because if I did, then they would no longer be secrets. I hope you understand.

Kind regards,
Camille

I suppose the one I suggested is really good but I kind of thought of another one considering that you were talking about the moon so I thought of this one, Luna, short for lunar.

Hey again, I'm posting about the Air Force info you requested this might be a little long btw. But I'm not in the AF yet I was suppose to join back during January but my dad wanted me to help finish building our lake house before I join so I'm not joining in until this September and I'll ship for boot camp which is here in San Antonio by probably Dec. But it could even take longer than that to get into boot camp after I sign the government paper, basically it depends on when the AF needs me and has room for me in boot. But boot camp will be 8 weeks long (it used to be 6 weeks but they're upgrading it to 8 weeks starting oct.) then I get shipped off to Technical Training. I could and will be shipped out to one of these AFB's for my first six months of Tech Training to either Sheppard AFB in Wichita Falls TX, Lackland AFB here in San Antonio TX, or Vandenberg AFB in California or anywhere in the states for that matter it depends on what job you're going for but these are the main bases for tech training for becoming an Aerospace Propulsion Apprentice (a.k.a. jet mechanic). After that it's wherever the AF needs me, it could be Germany, Australia, Great Britain, Korea, I'm hoping for Japan, or where I don't want to go if I can avoid it is Iraq or the Middle East. But in the world it could be anywhere, I really have no clue. Edwards AFB is a base that I'm really prone to be stationed at after I become a jet mechanic. My brother was stationed there for a decade. Also my brother says that I'll have to do one year long tour in South Korea or even longer. But all in all I'm dying to get in there now but I'm going to enjoy this last summer I have of being a civilian. Later Haiku, Tigers do rule! :)

PS - If you think this comment is too long you don't have to post it.

whippersnapper?
Fantome?
Santa's Little Helper?

Mavin,
It sounds like you have a good chance to get stationed somewhere other than the Middle East and that tech training sounds like it will serve you well in the future. I am also considering Luna although at this point the Nimble, is a strong contender.

Back to the mystery Whippet. Okay, Camille I understand where you are coming from or of course I don't since it's a mystery.

Ched- whippersnapper is cute but Fantome is cool. Very cool. I had no idea my blog friends had such talent for naming ghost creatures.

I will be posting the semi-finalists soon, although I am a creature of ambivalence and there are some great names here.
