the Moment long awaited arrives and Princess Haiku receives her Chrysanthemum Seedlings

I was expecting five seedlings from King's Mums and was gifted with a sixth chrysanthemum which makes that one more special. They arrived in a small UPS box which I can't imagine is a very pleasant experience for a tiny plant. However, they arrived intact and their sojourn in the confines of a dark box was brief. That is more than most of us can say. I can remember whole seasons in my life when I confined my spirit to darkness and limitation. Well, no more. The journey of these rare flowers will lead all who follow their path into light.

After shaking the seedlings gently from the dark soil in the plastic bag, I untangled their roots. My flute teacher is guiding me on the intricacies of the chrysanthemum path and advised me to plant them in little peat pots. That way I won't have to disturb the delicate roots when I transplant them into the large green planter boxes awaiting them. Speaking of which there weren't enough drainage holes in the planter boxes and mayhem resulted when I had to empty all the soil out to drill more holes. This is a lesson. Don't rush the process.

I tried to keep track of what variety each little plant was and then decided not to bother. After all, the plants will announce their colors and beauty as they bloom.

The seedlings will be moved from the little peat pots, sitting in red pots eventually into the planter boxes. They will tell me when they are ready.

Chrysanthemums should not be overwatered per instructions in the booklet, King's Mums sent me as this is a leading cause of chrysanthemum demise. -Not a pleasant thing to think about but life and death are so intertwined that it is really impossible to discuss one and not the other.

The seedlings will stay in the peat pots for one week while buds form. My understanding is that three buds are allowed to grow on top of the plant and others are removed. This is so that the chrysanthemum plant grows in the formation of the trinity; mother goddess, daughter and holy spirit. Well- this is my interpretation.

My flute teacher said to polish the buds with the mind. That when you are caring for your chrysanthemums you think of nothing else other than the flower. One is to bring full awareness into the care and nurture of the plants. Outside thoughts and the world must not intrude on the process.

Poetic meditation upon plants destined for perfection prepares the spirit for growth. Perhaps tonight, I will dream about my tiny seedlings, with all of their potential for striking transformation into creatures of dazzling beauty. But I must not anticipate and must enjoy fully their current small green, delicate nature. One must enter fully the moment the plant is in at all times.

Eventually, if they all survive I will have a 1) Golden Rain Spider 2) two Fleur De Lis Spider, 3 Orchid Spider 4 (Icicles Spider and 5) the gift spider of a Golden Splendor.

The summer stretches before me as a miraculous pathway into pristine beauty and perfection. I wish my skin was the magenta of a Fleur De Lis and my mind; icicles white. Well, the journey of these rare flowers will unfold all in good time. All we must do is follow.

sparkle of the Chrysanthemum within

My chrysanthemums will flash into brilliance and color, illuminating the heavens and everyone who views them thought, Princess Haiku. Any day now my seedlings will arrive in a UPS package from King's Mums.

What miracles of spirit will they become?

There will be five and whom will they grow for?

Time, water, sunlight and patience will reveal their secrets.

I am excited to embark on the way of the Chrysanthemum.

Will you come with me?

Let this journey of a rare flower begin.

Princess Haiku aspires to a small chrysanthemum garden

I am going to try to grow some of the amazing rare flowers, that I have featured in other posts on my blog. The special elder man that gave me these flowers and introduced me to the "Way of the Chrysanthemum" left this world a few weeks ago. He was very old and had a wonderful life and leaves a garden of mindfulness, compassion and empathy behind. If we all left such goodness on this earth the world would be well served.

For several days I was deeply saddened thinking that the beauty and grace of these flowers would no longer touch my life. Perhaps because I am a poet and not a flower grower it did not at first occur to me, that I could grow my own. A friend asked the obvious and voila; a wonderful idea was born.

I looked online, found King's Mums, which specializes in chrysanthemums and ordered five spider chrysanthemum rooted cuttings. They should arrive in a few days. The small cuttings need to be potted in four inch pots and as you can see I have five red pots waiting. After they grow larger I will transplant them into two larger rectangular boxes. The area I have prepared for this little garden is flooded with sunlight and I hopeful that my flowers will turn their faces to the sun. I have tried to do many things in life and often my health has interfered, but I am certain my tiny garden will flourish. When my flowers are full grown I will make gifts of them to others in the same spirit the magenta ones were given to me.

I ordered Flair (pale magenta) Fleur de Lis (deep magenta) Golden Rain and White Icicles. I intend to share every part of my chrysanthemum garden with you and perhaps these flowers, considered by Buddhist monks in Japan to be holy, will grace your lives too.

Zap; a secret Message

I was browsing through my favorite used bookstore and to my delight found a 1955 copy of "The Selected Poems of Frederico Garcia Lorca." Inside the book was a faded slip of paper perhaps used as a bookmark. On it were written these words which I have embraced as a secret text for all of us.

"...ourselves before and ourselves after. This assures anonymity. While we can talk with each other and feel each other, we cannot identify each other. Thus you will never be able to be entirely sure that each person you meet, for the rest of your life, has not participated in the Zap with you."

What is your interpretation of this and why do you think that I found it?

Chrysanthemum and a Six Word Memoir

I was tagged by Supernatural Fairy Tale to write a six word memoir. That's right; only six words and what comes to mind is perfect simplicity.

Okay, here goes.

A magenta flower said,
"Eye, Chrysanthemum."

Here are the rules:

1. Write your own six word memoir.
2. Post it on your blog and include a visual illustration if you’d like.
3. Link to the person that tagged you in your post.
4. Tag more blogs with links.
5. Enjoy

"Book of the Chrysanthemum"

This excerpt is from "Discussion of the Fundamentals of Chrysanthemum Painting," by Mai-mai Sze.

There are many different kinds of chrysanthemums and great variety in their colors and forms. Up to the Southern Sung, Yung and Ming periods, only literati and retired scholars treated the subtle fragrance of chrysanthemums as a special subject of painting. They expressed it in ink, not using any color. They excelled in expressing its purity. Others after them were renowned for ink painting of the chrysanthemum. in their works it may be perceived that the chrysanthemum is "defiant of frost and triumphant in autumn," a saying that expresses the essence (ch"i) of its character. In painting the chrysanthemum, this idea must be clearly understood so that the transmittal of it originates in the heart and passes through the wrist to the brush. Color can not convey the idea.

Princess Haiku dreamed of a chrysanthemum touched with frost.

"You are a remembrance of winter's magenta heart, she said
to the rare bloom."

And then she and the flower of clarity, danced
through a night that was extreme beauty; a Zen garden.

Follow the way of the Chrysanthemum......

mystery creature with fiery Chrysanthemum twins

Yesterday, was a perfect day said, Princess Haiku, for a friend gave me a gift of Chrysanthemum twins. Who are you, I asked them as they burst into fiery beauty.

Who do you think they are?

I am full of mysteries today, Princess Haiku continued. I thought my several hundred year old guardian creature was a Fu dog and now I am not so sure. If anyone can identify it please let me know. It stands ever alert guarding my door and on certain nights exhales frankincense into the air with ancient force. BTW his name is George.

Kiku, Kiku

I saw this white chrysanthemum from the New York Botanical Garden posted on flickR.

When it's all too much this ephemeral creature speaks to me, said Princess Haiku, of ancient legends, poetic beauty.... meditation...

Wrapping the chrysanthemum cloak around her like a shimmering moonlight of possibility, Princess Haiku vanished.

Doesn't she always?

Ghost Calibers, Pink Opus

What is yours?

immortelle, called Princess Haiku, where are you hiding?

Princess Haiku hurried home for the flower twilight was wrapping the world in its petal tight fog. I know they are hiding somewhere she said to herself. The last time I looked I could feel them and now this emptiness...........

Sea Violets by H.D.

This poem, Sea Violets by H.D. reminds me of my late mother.

Sea Violet

The white violet
is scented on its stalk,
the sea-violet
fragile as agate,
lies fronting all the wind
amonth the torn shells
on the and-bank.

The greater blue violets
flutter on the hill,
but who would change for these
who would change for these
one root of the white sort?

Violet
your grasp is frail
on the edge of the sand-hill,
but you catch the light-
frost, a star edges with its fire.

This morning Princess Haiku found Lotusgreen's post on Japonisme about the chrysanthemum and the upcoming New York Botanical Garden's Kiku exhibit. You will be dazzled too.

Princess Haiku was also delighted to visit Digital Flower Pictures and discover his wonderful pictures of the KiKu exhibit. Thank you so much DFP for sharing this tour with chrysanthemum devotees who are far away.

Magenta Chrysanthemums After Rain

Once more, once more
into magenta petals of the
chrysanthemum, I dive.

Where is this river that becomes
a mirror, my sea, the flow amidst,
purple flowers drunk with love,

awakening soul?

Princess Haiku expresses deepest appreciation to the flower that awakens beauty and true nature.

Temple of Chrysanthemum

Princess Haiku wandered until she came to the Temple of Chrysanthemum. Where else to go?

I learned from Julie at the Human Flower Project that The New York Botanical Gardens is presenting "Kiku: The Art of the Japanese Chrysanthemum; A flower and cultural exhibition" from October 20-November 18, 20007.
